Speaking of French Maids, the French call the joy of living, “Joie de Vivre.” With a stick of bread, lump of aged cheese and a vine-ripened tomato, a simple picnic is elevated to an art form.

Voila.

For a real masterpiece, I would opt to elevate this picture-perfect-picnic-of-art-for-moi, with a wine vineyard. Maybe some “tree-sized,” bendy straws for sipping fermented grapes, so I wouldn’t have to move my derriere from its comfy red and white gingham-checked “tablecloth.”

My brother Dan – peacekeeper, “diplomat” and our family’s attaché – was trying to convince me one day that we had a saint in our family’s midst.

As I smiled with pride and readied myself to graciously accept the compliment, maybe take a little curtsy, he said, “Out of all of us, Bev, will be the first one in Heaven to get her wings.”

I don’t ever remember believing in Santa Claus. (Or, any other larger than life creature manufactured for commercial consumption disguised by advertising as a child’s delight.)

I’ve always been mystified by the tradition of telling children that Santa Claus exists and that he knows if they’ve been naughty or nice. A tradition, by the way, that applies the principal of reward and punishment; that part I get.
