Waiting In The Wings

My brother Dan – peacekeeper, “diplomat” and our family’s attaché – was trying to convince me one day that we had a saint in our family’s midst.

As I smiled with pride and readied myself to graciously accept the compliment, maybe take a little curtsy, he said, “Out of all of us, Bev, will be the first one in Heaven to get her wings.”

In This Corner Today: Santa; in the Other; God

I don’t ever remember believing in Santa Claus. (Or, any other larger than life creature manufactured for commercial consumption disguised by advertising as a child’s delight.)

I’ve always been mystified by the tradition of telling children that Santa Claus exists and that he knows if they’ve been naughty or nice. A tradition, by the way, that applies the principal of reward and punishment; that part I get.

Challenge Day

Son: “Mom, did you know that God can write on stones?”
Mom: “Really? How is that possible?”
Son: “With lightening.”
Mom: “Holy Cow! Lightening?”
Son: “Yep. God can do anything, Mom, just like you!”

Well, my life is complete. In the span of one breath and thirty seconds, my son managed to liken me to God – not because I am, but because he thinks I am.

Like a balloon, I felt myself fill; expanding with breaths of pride, pleasure, delight.

You Can’t Fire Me; I Quit!

Someone once told me when I was living and working in Los Angeles: “You’re nothing unless you’ve been fired at least once in your life.” Needless to say, they had just received a pink slip.

I was a bit cynical; I felt invincible at that age, like I could still change the world.

Since college, I had had a great track record of getting hired and staying hired. Back then, it was actually a good thing to stay in a job for long periods of time. I was the perfect Golden Retriever – the boss would ask for the seemingly impossible and I would go out and make it happen.

Husband: “Good morning.”

Wife: “What?”

If you’ve ever been married or in a relationship for more than five minutes, you can probably relate to the following conversation. If not, then please tell me how not to get annoyed by my very, at times, annoying husband, who, by the way, I love despite the following conversation, but only because of a hot dog. Yep, the word “hot dog” may have saved our marriage. He is lucky. This time, ‘cause I hate hot dogs.

Compassion and Forgiveness: Who Cares.

It’s been twenty-three years since I last saw my father and thirteen since I have spoken to him. I happened to bump into him, however, at a department store last month.

I think I heard his voice at the same time I spotted him. He was telling the sales clerk how cute she was, to which she giggled. (The same girl who was so rude to my husband and I moments earlier, that we considered leaving altogether.)

A Laughin’ Good Year

Life is about intentions. This may be a strange place to start my blog, but it is my intention just to start… again. I tried to blog last year, but my attempt was ill-fated and it’s not even important as to why. I have started and restarted so many things, so many times. Thanks mostly, [...]
