Episode #11 – Hotel Rwanda: Love Prevails Over The Rwandan Genocide

Rutagengwa

Is love stronger than death?

Brene Brown says that courage means risking it all, and my guests today talk about how they did just that as they endured the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Inspired by his love for Christine, Jean Bosco recounts how the genocide came to pass, and how he found the courage to leave Hotel Rwanda to get Christine–hopefully, alive, and return with her to the hotel. An unplanned refuge with only a thin line of protection, Hotel Rwanda was the only place to get away from the killers.

“Love is a powerful feeling,” he says. “It gives us courage we will never know we have until we face our fears. “I accepted death, instead of failing to go get Christine.”

This isn’t just a story about surviving the Rwandan genocide or a love story between a man and a woman, though. This is a love story between human beings trying to help each other through the worst of times–an ethnic cleansing.

On the top floor of Hotel Rwanda, people from all denominations gathered to pray and to help each other. “We just wanted to be humble kids in front of God,” says Jean Bosco: “Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists, Jehovah Witnesses, Muslims, even non-believers,” and they all had one thing in common. They were scared and in need of protection and comfort.

Until next time,

Be Bold. Be Brave. Be Daring and take a bite of courage.

And remember: If you really knew me, you would know that we are the same ~ Mo

See you next week.

Rather than one bite of courage this was a multi-course meal. What I mean is that it is one thing to manifest courage in short bursts for minutes, or some days. But Jean and his wife had to maintain their courage in the face of extreme danger for several years. In addition to courage of course they gave witness to faith and hope and love; the 3 cardinal virtues.

A very compelling interview. Thank you Mo.
